How Are Express Entry Categories Selected?
IRCC determines Express Entry categories based
on Canada’s economic and demographic objectives.
Most occupation-based categories are aligned with labour
market demands, focusing on sectors facing worker shortages. These
categories are included in the Express Entry system to help address critical
labour gaps where local talent is insufficient, making immigration
essential.
In contrast, the French-language proficiency category supports Canada’s commitment to bilingualism and the promotion of French outside Quebec, as outlined in the Official Languages Act. Given the role of immigration in achieving this goal, IRCC plays a key role in welcoming and assisting francophone newcomers to Canada.
